Why are ginger preserves so hard to find in the US?

What do I serve it with?

In England, people spread it on toast and crumpets for a breakfast treat. They also serve it on crackers or sliced bread with afternoon tea. Our customers send us terrific serving ideas too:

  • Stirred into hot oatmeal

  • Piled atop warmed goat or cream cheese and crackers

  • With pork in place of apple sauce

  • Icing or filling in cakes

  • Ice cream topping

Will my kids like it?

Only if you don't let them know it's better for them than food with high fructose corn syrup, candy and soda pop. Our ginger preserves do not use high fructose corn syrup, only raw cane sugar.

Who first used ginger?

Ginger has been used as both a spice and a medicine in India and China since ancient times. It was known of and used by the Greeks and Romans and could be found throughout Europe as far back as the 10th Century. The spice comes from the plant's 'rhizome' which is an underground stem.

The Latin name zingiber is derived from the Sanskrit word shringavera, which means "shaped like a deer's antlers". This describes the knobby shape of the root.

What are those tiny fibers in my preserves? Ginger root, which is actually a tuber, has visible fibers after it is chopped. We peel and process the whole tuber, resulting in lots of chewy, delicious chunks of ginger and fibrous root tissue in the preserves. Not only are the chunks and fibers perfectly safe to eat, they indicate we use real ginger root, not powdered ginger, ginger flavoring or ground ginger spice. Our preserves are the real thing.

Is Ginger harmful?

Allergies to ginger are very unusual. If you have never eaten ginger, start with small servings.

Ginger's Medicinal uses

Ginger is recognized as a remedy for appetite loss, indigestion and motion sickness. Ginger root has a proven ability to combat all forms of nausea and vomiting, and is often taken as a tea by pregnant women suffering from morning sickness. For many people, ginger is one of the absolute best therapies for nausea of any kind, and can even work on motion sickness as well.

Where does ginger grow?

Ginger was discovered in tropical Asia but can no longer be found in its wild state. Today it is grown in most tropical countries including Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Jamaica is renowned for producing the world's best quality root ginger. India is responsible for about half of the world's entire ginger production. Other well known sources for producing ginger include Australia and China. Hawaii is the only state in the United States that is currently commercially producing ginger.

How is it used?

After 5-7 months of growth, new rhizome forms (known as 'green') are dug up and preserved in sugar syrup or used for crystallized ginger. After 8-10 months, older rhizomes (the underground stem of the plant) are dug up and are used as fresh ginger root (what we use) or become dried ginger. This can be used in biscuits, puddings, cake, gingerbread, soups, pickles, curry powder, ginger beer, ginger ale or ginger wine.
